My Road King has been at the local Harley Davidson dealer's since Monday afternoon when I dropped it off to investigate a noise it's been making.
It appears the noise was a loose compensator nut. I had no clue what that was, so a bit of googling tells me that it's behind the primary cover and part of the drive cog bits coming on the the engine that connect to the chains that drive the clutch and the rest of the bike. How about that for technical! In any case these things occasionally come loose, mine had, was rattling and needed replacing.
I dropped in today to see how things were going and to see if I might have been able to have the Harley Davidson back on the weekend and I got to see behind the stuff behind the primary cover. Wow, there's a lot going on in there!
The Harley specialist mechanic at the dealer started making noises about the increase in power generated from putting the 103 kit in may have kicked it off, if that makes 'em feel better that's fine with me. It didn't appear that reassembly and test riding was going to occur in time for me to pick the bike up this weekend and I had a bit of a discussion about exaclty what the symptoms of a loose compensator nut might and might not be. Out of this arose a need for them to investigate something else for me.
The wear on my footpans noted by the dealer staff, one of whom mentioned that they weren't supposed to be consumables. I wasn't sure why not, surely if footpans weren't meant to be worn away they wouldn't put them so close to the road????
I also visited the local HOG Chapter website through which I found some contact by one of our Chapter members about the overheating issue I mentioned a few posts back. He's is going to give me some info about this. One of the many advantages of belonging to a group of fellow enthusiasts!
So it looks like I might have another week or so of waiting to see what the Harley Davidson dealers get up to and find. But given I've racked up 4000k's or so in the last month a small break isn't an issue at this point and my family agree.
