The Guru's Verdict: First Service Done

Date:
By Wom Battle

A call this afternoon from Noel announced that he had finished the survey of the Road King and it was time to come and get it.  There was a warning that there were a few things to discuss.  Initially I mentioned that I wouldn't be able to get there until tomorrow morning, which was the case, however after the call I knew I had to have the discussion sooner rather than later so I organised some transport and headed over.

The bike had had a service. The front brake pads were replaced and Noel had had a good look right over the it.  The discussion revealed my apprehension was misplaced.  Matters raised were

  1. The screw mechanism that held the headlight surround/sleeve on was a bit dodgy but could be fixed if I wanted.
  2. The sump plug (I hope I got the term correct) had been stripped a little.  It was fine for now but should be fixed at the next service (a bit of a major job that required two people at one point) and some major dissassembly of the rear of the bike.
  3. The battery in the Road King was small (not the correct one) and the bracket mechanism that would hold the correct battery in was missing. The battery that was there, while it isn't likely to cause any issues, is not properly secured.
  4. The rear tyre was close to needing replacement, I knew that :-)

Other than that, the Road King had the seal of approval and I was extremely happy.  I've organised for Noel to get hold of the parts to sort the battery out and at the same time I'll get the new rear tyre fitted. The sump plug will be sorted at the next service (in 4000 kms) and I'm not at all concerned about the headlight thing for now.

I also spoke to Noel about Highway Pegs and was showed a number of options.  Too many to make a decision right now, I'll need to do some research and see if I can see some in situ and discuss their merits with other owners if I get the oppportunity.  I like the thought of legs out riding.

Cost of the service, parts and assessment: $575.00
Cost of the peace of mind: Priceless
