I leave for My Isa tomorrow and as of this morning my Harley Davidson Road King was at the service centre of the local dealer for the third time in order to resolve an oil leak. I was told some gaskets were going to be replaced, however when I arrived to pick it up there had only been more tightening done by the fourth year apprentice who was confident that the leak was resolved this time, despite the fact that no-one had ridden the bike to test it.
I questioned why "tightening" didn't resolve it last time and was told that work was performed on bolts that were not easily accessible, so they weren't done last time. I made a comment about thoroughness and commitment to the issue resolution.
I can't say that at this stage I was feeling confident but I had no choice but to confirm with the service staff that it was their opinion the Harley Davidson was roadworthy and ready for a 5000+ k trip, "but keep an eye on it".
So I took it home with a wait and see attitude ready to leave tomorrow with a cloud over the state of the Harley.
Update after the trip: The main transmission leak is resolved as a result of the last round of tightening. A minor leak remains which will be sorted out early next month when I won't need the bike for a week or so. At the moment happy with the result, but not particuarly pleased it took three goes to fix.
