The First Outing

Date:
By Wom Battle

After the excitement of bringing the Harley-Davidson home I was looking forward to getting on it and going for a ride.  With his new helmet and jacket so was my son.  Happy in the knowledge that I wasn't going to get out by myself I was looking forward to sharing his first outing on a motorcyle, and a Harley Davidson to boot!

After some significant instruction on how to be a good pillion passenger from his mother we were away. I didn't really know where we were going, there was a lot of threatening cloud about so I decided to head to areas that looked like there was "less cloud".  I also considere more open roads a safer bet, more traffic going in the same direction and less gear changing.  I was still wondering if I could ride!

We ended up out the link road on the freeway heading north.  Cruising two up at 110kph was very nice on the Road King, a little louder than I was used  to (years ago) but I couldn't resist occasionally giving the throttle a squirt and listening to the chromy beast roar into action.  Far from startling accelleration but I was a proud dad.

While north was the right direction, we rode about 30k's (East Maitland) before the weather really started to threaten so rather than getting soaked around we went and rode home via a slightly different route.  Great fun! My sons grin was ear to ear, he was an instinctive pillion who proudly announced that he let go of where his mum told him to hang on once during the ride.

I found out that I can still ride, a couple of missed gears and some confusion about which gear I was in a couple of times, looking for sixth... (I'm sure I'll get used to that as I get used to the bike, although I wish it had a friggin' tacho).

The 98 Road King is officially christened and my son is no longer a motorcyle virgin (am I allowed to say that on the internet?). Cruising with my boy on the back of my Harley-Davidson. Who would have thought?  It's certainly something I never considered, even with the plan of getting myself a bike at 50.  I guess it's because the plan was hatched pre children.  It's been a strange three weeks since the plan was hatched.
